8 Things To Do At 5AM

I’ve been waking up early recently and have been struggling to find things to do at 5am. There are a few things that I’ve found help my daily productivity, allowing me to win the morning. In turn, these activities help me to win the day. I’ll be sharing these things in this post.

Get Up

The first thing to do upon waking up early is to get up! Don’t hit the snooze button. Get straight out of bed. If it helps, count down from 5 and be moving on 1.

Drink some water and make your bed. You’ve achieved the first win of the day and built some discipline. Good job!

Exercise

Being up early means you have time to do the things that matter. For almost everyone, this means taking care of yourself first. The best way to do that is exercise. Exercise keeps you in great physical and mental health. Get a workout in, get your blood pumping, and feel energised to tackle the day ahead.

Meditate

Take care of your body with exercise. Take care of your mind with meditation.

Meditate early in the morning to clear your head and prepare your mind for the day. Recognise useless thinking and gain control over your monkey mind. Doing so will make you calmer and more logical throughout the day.

Morning Pages or Journal

An alternative or follow up to meditation is writing morning pages or journaling. Write down everything that comes to your head. Doing so gets thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Writing long-hand first thing will often create opportunities for a creative breakthrough.

Learn

To ensure you are growing and improving every day, set some time each morning to learn. Learning could be reading a book for 20 minutes, practicing your guitar, or making progress in an online course.

Work On A Personal Project

By taking some time to work on a personal project, you’re looking out for your future self. You’re giving yourself better odds for a better future. Our willpower and discipline are highest in the mornings; use this time to work on the things that matter to you. If you’ve been putting off a project, begin early in the morning. The higher levels of willpower will help. Prioritise difficult and most important tasks for best results.

Coffee. Just Coffee.

Unless you’re one of those magical beings that don’t need caffeine to function, go get a coffee. It’ll help you kickstart the day and get to work. But don’t waste the buzz – use it for productive reasons. Exercise, learning, or working on a personal project are all good things to do after coffee.

Plan Your Day

Where you’re a To-Do list dude or a schedule dudette, the best days start with planning. Without a clear plan, you won’t know what to do during the day. Without that knowledge, you won’t achieve as much as you could each day. So, take a few minutes to list out required tasks and time slots you’ll complete them.

Some Alternatives

If you don’t want to do any or all of the above, here are further options for you:

  • Go watch the sunrise
  • Spend some time outside in nature
  • Tackle some chores
  • Work on a side-hustle
  • Meal prep
  • Learn a new language
  • Organise your home
