How To Use Your Time Better – Sunday Chores Batching

You may have heard of batching, a productivity concept to make better use of your time. Here, we’ll be focusing on Sunday chores batching – getting your weekly chores and tasks done in one batch.

Batching is grouping together similar tasks and getting the completed all in one go. It works due to economies of scale – efficiency and output improve with scale.

You can apply batching to your own life with a Sunday chores day. This is something I do every Sunday, where I knock out my weekly chores and activities in one go.

The idea behind this day is to create more structure in my life and week, and increase efficiency. Doing my weekly tasks in one go allows me to generate momentum and use completing each task as a boost.

There are a few benefits to this system:

It decreases worry throughout the week

You’re not thinking about or worrying about your weekly activities as you go about your week. You don’t come home from work on a Tuesday and think ‘Oh no, I have to do my washing tonight’. You know that washing, as with your other weekly tasks, gets done on Sunday.

More organisation in your life

Using this system creates more structure in your life, which in turn makes your life more organised. Whenever you think of a weekly task, you can add it to your Sunday batching list.

You become more productive

By making use of batching, you become more efficient. You are making better use of your time. By dedicating Sundays or a specific day to do your weekly tasks, you save 15-minute chunks at random points throughout the week. You can then use this time to do work that matters or work towards your goals.

The efficiency and momentum allow you to complete the collective tasks in a shorter amount of time.

How to create your own chores day

It’s a simple two-step process:

Step 1 – List all the tasks that need to be completed once a week, or roughly once a week.

Step 2 – Dedicate those tasks to Sunday or your chosen chores day.

That’s it. That’s all you have to do – it’s incredible.

But why stop there? You can go one step further and add activities that will benefit your current and future life. For example, cleaning, tidying, and preparing for the week ahead.

For some, this might require a shift in routine. You may do your washing on a Thursday and your weekly meal prep on a Monday. By combining these into one day, such as Sunday, you make better use of your time.

Where to start

Here are some example activities that I do most weeks, that you can do too. This will help you to form your own chores day:

  • Cleaning
  • Tidying
  • Washing
  • Preparing for the week ahead
    • Drawing your bullet journal design
    • Setting weekly goals
    • Preparing a schedule
  • Changing bedding (once a week or once every other week)
  • Calling a friend or family member
  • Organising your home
  • Hoovering
  • Deciding meals for the week
  • Organising physical files
  • Organising digital files
  • Checking in with your budget
  • Checking in with your goals
  • Grooming or self-care
  • Cleaning shoes

There you have loads of examples you can choose from. You can now begin to shape your own chores day.

  2. […] Doing this once a week is best. I don’t mean choosing items to get rid of once a week – that’s something that you can do as and when. Whenever you notice something you rarely use or have forgotten about, that’s the optimal time to consider getting rid of it. You can use some of the rules shared later to help with this, such as the 90/90 rule. […]
