Introduction To Minimalism

Many of us have heard of minimalism and its benefits. But what is minimalism? This post will provide an introduction to minimalism.

As a graduate, being a minimalist is one of the best choices you can make. When you think about it, owning less makes your future much easier. Moving out, travelling, and relocation for work are all much easier when you have less. They are more appealing when you don’t own as much.

What Is Minimalism?

Minimalism, as I see it, is basically:

  • Being conscious of what you own and what you buy
  • Valuing quality over quantity
  • Only keeping the things that serve a purpose, including sentimental items
  • Being able to enjoy and appreciate the things you have more, as a result of having less

Minimalism isn’t limited to your physical space either. Digital minimalism helps with your graduate employability. It also helps with your general wellbeing.

Minimalism For Clarity

Minimalism helps with clarity. Having fewer things on your mind helps you to focus on the things that matter most.

If you’re a recent graduate, it’s likely that you’re yet to have a clear idea of where you want to take your life. Minimalism can help with this, as it increases flexibility with future options.

Say, for example, you have tons of stuff. I’m talking two wardrobes full of clothes, many storage boxes full of old toys, old DVDs, and random bits and bobs.

Then, randomly you get offered a dream job on the other side of the country. Or a once-in-a-lifetime month-long travel experience. Having less stuff makes it so much easier to accept and pursue these opportunities.

Minimalism Improves The Quality Of Your Life

Not only that, but the quality of your life improves as a result. Having less ‘stuff’ and only keeping useful and meaningful items means your quality of living will improve. The more stuff you have, the more things will be weighing on your mind at any point – whether you know it or not. A lot of this occurs in the subconscious. This concept is also partly why writing everything down can help with mental health and cognitive acuity.
