Recently, I’ve been trying a technique to help me stay motivated and on track to overcome this addiction.
As the title suggests, the technique is to keep a NoFap journal. But it’s not as simple as you might first think. Let me explain a bit about it and why it works, then how you can start experiencing the power of this tool.
What is a NoFap journal?
In essence, a NoFap journal is a daily, hand-written reflection in the form of a journal entry that you complete each night. The content is based on your NoFap experience for that day.
Here, you’d think about and write down a few things, such as the following:
- What was the biggest challenge to your streak today?
- Did you have any urges? How strong were they?
- What caused your urges if you had them?
- How are you feeling?
- Were you horny? Was there a cause to this?
- How did you manage any urges?
- Are there any strategies you are using? How effective have they been, and what can you improve on?
If you were close to relapse, think about why.
If you relapsed, write down the exact sequence of events that led to that relapse. Then write how you could have changed that sequence – interrupted the pattern – to have prevented that relapse. This will be useful for the future.
If you don’t know what to write, consider using the above as writing prompts.
Why keeping a NoFap journal helps
One extremely powerful use of a NoFap journal is dating each entry as ‘Day X / 90’ – essentially, the day of your streak. As the days increase, this becomes motivation. You can end the day on a positive note and be inspired to continue your streak the following day.
Doing this alone will improve your streaks. It’s a regular reminder that you’re making progress. Each successful day is one step closer to achieving your goal.
And there are more ways a NoFap journal can help you.
It’s a way to track your progress, track your common triggers and patterns, and reflect upon how you can better overcome your specific case of this addiction.
You can start to create your own personal NoFap timeline, to see on what days things happen. And then you can record that data in a spreadsheet, once you’ve gathered enough of it.
With this data, you can know exactly how best for you as an individual to fight this addiction. It will reveal the strategies that are best for you.
The power of tracking
Maybe you’ve only ever gotten to day 5. Well, when you’re always reflecting on day 5’s events, you’ll be able to identify commonalities between each relapse. You can use those commonalities to prepare. To create strategies and battle plans.
When day 5 then comes around, you can implement those strategies and win the fight. But without the knowledge of how best to prepare, of how to win the battle, you’ll only ever get to day 5 and lose the same fight over and over again.
That’s what a NoFap journal can help with.
Think about it like this. Say you’re stuck in a daily time loop. Every day is the exact same, from when you wake up to when you go to sleep.
If all you do each day is the exact same, nothing will change. But when you start to track, record and remember what happens on that day, that’s when you can start making change happen.
When you know what things are going to happen, you can prepare a strategy for how to interact with the said things as they happen. Without the knowledge of what happens, you cannot prepare, and so the outcome will be the same.
Day 5 is your time loop. Relapse is the thing that happens. If you’re not aware of the traps you commonly fall into – the things that cause your day 5 relapse – then you will forever be caught by that trap.
When you record the series of events that lead to relapse, you can change them or prevent them from happening. When that changes, the outcome changes. Awareness allows you to do this.
You achieve this through keeping a NoFap journal. Keeping a daily log of your experience forces you to think about what happened each day – thus creating awareness.
‘What gets measured gets managed’
This quote, what gets measured gets managed, is a key thing to remember. If you’re measuring and tracking your progress, you’ll be managing it. And if you’re managing it, you’re much more likely to succeed. Something that’s managed is within your control.
Something that’s not measured – and thus not managed – is outside of your control. Therefore, if you aren’t measuring your progress you’ll be making less progress than you could be.
Start measuring – that is, start tracking your streaks, recording and reflecting on each day – and you’ll start managing. Start managing and you’ll start winning. Start winning and you’ll Become Triumphant.
How to keep a NoFap journal
Every night, before sleep, get out a journal and a pen. I’d recommend A5, and keeping it by your bed.
Begin by writing ‘Day X / 90’ – Day 3/90, Day 49/90, Day 78/90, etc.
Take 5-10 minutes to think about and reflect on the day. Use the ideas mentioned earlier as mental prompts and write.
That’s it.
Nobody else has to read it. It can be as scruffy as you like, as long as you can read it – because you’ll need to be able to read it to identify commonalities and create strategies.
Do that every day and I can guarantee you’ll be making progress.
Take Action – 10 Minutes
Get yourself a journal and a pen, and leave it by your bed. Tonight, before sleep, write your first NoFap journal entry. If you’re already into a streak, start on that day. Do not relapse just so you can start on day 1. Then repeat this process every day for the remainder of your 90-day streak.
So, that’s how a NoFap journal can help you overcome a porn addiction.
What are your thoughts? Do you think this practice could be improved in any way – and if so, I’d love to know how. I recommend you try this for a few days then come back and share your experience here.
Thanks for reading. I hope this technique can help you, bro.
Until next time, Stay Triumphant.
James.
