To be more organised, you can use organisational tips to improve how you live your life. Personal success comes from having your physical space in order. To help you be more organised, here are three quick organisation tips.
Organisation Tip #1 – Give Everything A Place
Give every item in your home or your place of work a specific place to live. Ensure that at any given point, if not in use, it should be in that given space. Why does this work? A few reasons:
When you first give something a place, you’ll likely choose a place that you’ll remember. This place is also likely tidy and organised already. This means that when everything is where it belongs, you’ll be able to find everything with ease.
Whenever you see the item you’ll be prompted to return it to its place. Doing so will restore the sense of order and allow you to focus on what matters.
You’ll have a feeling of control and a quiet confidence that everything is where it should be.
Organisation Tip #2 – Dedicate An Organisation Day
Here, I mean choosing one day a week to organise everything. Use this day to go through and restore everything back to its original order and balance.
Return items to their original places. Sort any and all documents. Go through your emails. Do relevant chores. Return things to their dedicated spots.
I call this my ‘chores day’. Doing this utilises the concept of ‘batching’, which is essentially economies of scale. By grouping together similar tasks and completing them in one batch, you’re more productive. I’ll talk about batching in a future post.
Organisation Tip #3 – Invest In Storage Items
Get an EDC tray or Every Day Carry tray. These are small trays which you throw items such as keys, wallet, phone, headphones, etc, in.
This combines well with Tip 1. By using your EDC tray as a dedicated space for your smaller items, it helps them to stay accessible. It also helps prevent them from getting lost.
Next, consider the usefulness of storage bins or shelves. Shelves are great for storing books, and storage bins can be great for your shoes or clothes.
By having places to put things, you decrease the likelihood that you’ll leave stuff lying around. Don’t put things in a random location; dedicate a space in an appropriate storage bin.
