Looking to make money as a graduate? Try creating some passive income streams using your university skills. One thing that graduates usually have is an abundance of time. Another is 3-years worth of specific knowledge.
While on the job hunt, it’s unlikely that you’ll spend every waking hour on your job hunting routine. You’ll have some time to spend elsewhere. Here’s how you can make some money using your university skills and knowledge while setting yourself up for the future.
The basic idea is to utilise the knowledge you’ve gained at university. Combine this with content-creation skills, such as writing, and create passive income streams.
Passive Income Stream Idea #1 – Writing Ebooks
This is a classic passive income stream idea. For recent university graduates, it’s a very effective and easy idea. It’s likely that while at university, you wrote a lot of essays about specific subjects. Writing ebooks is a similar process.
Your ebooks don’t have to be hundreds of pages long like popular bestsellers. Some ebooks with only 20 pages sell better! Instead, think of them as less-restricted essays. Whatever subject your degree was in, you should have enough knowledge to write at least 2 or 3 short ebooks. The more niche the degree, the better the chances of your books selling.
The content in your ebook can be anything. The higher quality information you can provide, the better. The same with how specific the information is. If you can solve a very unique problem within your niche, your book is likely to sell.
You could even write a handbook on your specific university course!
Passive Income Stream Idea 2 – Start A Blog
Again, this is making use of your knowledge and writing ability. Starting a blog is beneficial to graduates for more than passive income reasons. It helps to improve your online presence, which we’ve looked into previously.
It will take some time to grow your blog before you can monetise it. That being said, it’s a great way to continue a writing practice and to keep learning about a specific subject area. It shows you’re actively learning and growing within your chosen niche, making you more employable.
Passive Income Stream Idea 3 – Start A YouTube Channel
Starting a YouTube channel has the same benefits as starting a blog – the difference is in the type of content. For anyone that did a creative degree, I’d recommend starting a YouTube channel over a blog, unless you prefer writing. There’s a lot more room for creativity with YouTube videos when compared to blog writing. Or do both!
Video is a much more engaging medium, so your channel will likely grow quicker than a blog. But, YouTube requires more time and energy to work well.
Passive Income Stream Idea 4 – Create An Online Course
You might prefer to compile everything you learned into an informative video format. YouTube may seem like it would take too long to grow or make money from. If this is the case, consider creating an online course.
Doing so requires a lot of effort up-front, and you’ll need a lot of knowledge about a certain subject area. But, once it’s made, you don’t have to worry. Just sit back and let the money roll in. Compact your three years of learning into several high-quality videos. Create an introduction video and an outro video, then sell them together as a course!
If you don’t want to go through the business and marketing hassle, there are simple alternatives. Sites such as Skillshare or Udemy make it easy to publish courses online and pay monthly royalties.
Passive Income Stream Idea 5 – Sell Your Study Notes
You’ve studied, you’ve written notes, you’ve learned. You’ve got a degree; now you can make some money! Students are more than willing to buy study notes from someone else who has done their degree – why not you?
Take some time to type up your study notes. Look through and decide which are the most relevant, and which are unnecessary. Create a document with an appealing design – I recommend using InDesign. The nicer the document looks, the more likely you are to get sales.
Of course, you could just bullet-point everything you learned into a word document. It would still sell if promoted in the right places. Approach this how you like.
