Tell me if this is you – you want to start your day properly, but have no morning routine ideas. Well, good news, this post is for you!
It’s no surprise that by starting your day with a successful morning routine, you will go on to win the day. You do this by building early momentum through positive habits. In turn, this can have a huge impact on your productivity throughout the rest of the day. And we all know that the more productive we are, the easier it is to achieve our goals.
In this post, I offer you several morning routine ideas to inspire the creation of your own morning routine. To learn more about morning routines in general and how to best form them, read this detailed post.
Each morning routine idea is listed in my recommended order, recapped at the end of the post.
Morning Routine Idea #1 – Waking Up
Waking up at the same time every day will help your body’s circadian rhythm. Use an alarm to keep this time consistent. This will make it easier to actually get out of bed. You get your first win of the day if you get up straight away, already beginning a positive snowball effect. Further, this builds self-discipline and willpower.
Morning Routine Idea #2 – Drink Water
While you’re asleep, you are unable to drink any water, so when you wake, you’re dehydrated. If asleep for 8 hours, that’s 8 hours without water! Drinking water upon waking will ease that groggy morning feeling. It also helps you feel awake sooner.
Morning Routine Idea #3 – Make Your Bed
Making your bed is one of the best morning habits. If you choose to form any on this list, make it this one.
Every morning you make your bed, you achieve your first proper win of the day. This encourages you to carry that winning momentum forwards, making you more productive.
Further, making your bed means that you have something to look forward to at the end of each day. No matter how stressful or negative your day has been, you have a made bed waiting for you. There is always one small thing to look forward to.
These three tips should be essential to every person’s morning routine. They’ve all had a significant impact on my own life; now it’s time for your life to improve.
Idea #4 – Affirmations
Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, affirmations can change your life. Repeating your affirmations daily will alter your life in one way or another.
Repeat the affirmation(s) to yourself daily. Eventually, your subconscious will begin to believe that statement.
The more specific the affirmation, the better. Your subconscious will then look for ways to prove that statement true. That’s because your subconscious doesn’t like to be wrong. Ever heard of a thing called cognitive dissonance?
For example:
After accepting the affirmation ‘I am healthy’, your subconscious will begin to look for ways to prove that statement true. The next time you’re out food shopping, you’re more likely to choose healthier foods. A healthy person wouldn’t feed their body with sugary or junk foods.
Of course, it helps to give your subconscious a kind of kickstart when it comes to affirmations. You can’t expect to become a healthy person just by saying the same thing every day. You also need to change your eating habits and behaviour. If this is unclear, or you’d like some examples of good affirmations, leave a comment and I’ll help you out!
Idea #5 – Exercise
We all know that exercise is essential to our long-term health. In prehistoric times, you could hunt, gather, or die. The sooner you began, the more likely you were to survive. There was never a guarantee that you’d eat. Unless you chose to die. Then you’d be dead. Oops.
Working out in the morning boosts your metabolism. It increases your energy, develops self-discipline, and improves the quality of your sleep.
I have found that exercising earlier in the day makes me more productive throughout the day. I also usually feel happier and healthier.
Idea #6 – Meditation
Breathe in… and breathe out…
Another thing we know is good for us, but rarely find time to do, is Meditation. Meditation is an essential part of both my morning routine and my life in general. You already know some of the vast benefits of meditation:
- Reduced stress
- Reduced anxiety
- Increased self-awareness
- Greater focus and longer attention span
- Better sleep
- Calmer mind
- More emotionally stable
- Helps fight addictions
Meditation, or mindfulness, is a common habit among the successful people of the world. It is often seen as essential for a successful life. To help make meditation a habit, try linking it to an existing habit. This could be right after you exercise, or after you take a shower. I like relaxing my mind and clearing my head after I’m physically relaxed and clean, so I link meditation with showering.
Meditation is also a keystone habit. This basically means that by meditating, you increase the likelihood of other habits sticking. Think of it as invisible glue for your positive habits.
Idea #7 – Prepare For The Day
If you have no clear idea about what you want to achieve in the day, how do you expect to achieve anything at all? How do you expect to make progress towards your goals if you don’t have actionable steps planned out?
The main purpose of writing a To-Do list or preparing a schedule is to clarify the outcome of the day. What needs to be accomplished to mark the day as a win?
Organising your tasks in such a way helps with time-management and lets you know if you are ever off track.
Writing these out long-hand will help to solidify the tasks in your brain. This will motivate you towards that feeling of accomplishment. Further, this minimises the risk of getting distracted by technology.
If your To-Do list or schedule are digital, you create the risk of distraction each time you return to them. Notifications are ever-present. A few minutes can turn into several hours with great ease. By writing on paper, you eliminate this potential risk.
Bonus points for choosing your Most Important Task(s) (MIT) of the day. This is the task you will prioritise and get done before anything else. Completing your MIT(s) guarantees the day as a win.
