We all want to be more motivated. It’s a common struggle that both myself and many other people know all too well. Our productive / success culture is so focused on hustle and success. This makes it easy to compare yourself – and your motivation – to that of another person.
Often, this idea that we aren’t motivated enough is true. We could be more motivated. This blog post will cover the three Ps of motivation, helping you to learn how to be more motivated.
Almost any and all motivation can fall into one of the three ‘P’ categories. You are either motivated by Play, Purpose, or Potential.
The First P Of Motivation – Play
The first method of boosting your motivation is through using ‘Play’ motivation. Play is engaging in an activity because it is enjoyable. Think of playing a video game or watching a film. We do the activity because it is fun. The work becomes the reward, which motivates you to ‘work’ even more.
You might immediately jump to leisure activities when thinking of Play. But, this idea and system also apply to other things.
For example, think about a challenging video game. While playing the game, you might get killed many times or face repeat mistakes. Regardless, you continue to play. You want to overcome the level or obstacle. That, my friend, is Play.
How To Apply Play Motivation To Work
Try ‘gamifying’ your work. Set challenges, use rewards, systems, level-ups, and equipables. Some examples include:
- Training your focus or typing speed to ‘level up’
- Work deadlines are the ‘final boss’
- Listening to music as an equipable to improve focus and productivity

The Second P Of Motivation – Purpose
Purpose pushes you forward by focusing on the outcome of the work, rather than the work itself. The result of the work is what drives you; the purpose of the outcome. What will the outcome do for you or the world?
You may volunteer or work for a non-profit organisation. Purpose is clear here – helping improve the world. It’s easy to find motivation to keep working when the purpose is clear.
When your values align with those of the company, it’s much easier to feel motivated.
When your values align with those of the company, it’s much easier to feel motivated. For example, consider a previously-homeless person. By volunteering at a homeless shelter, they’ll feel driven to provide high-quality work. The cause is important to them as they can relate to the situation.
Keeping Purpose in your head will help you to push through struggles. The reasoning behind your actions will motivate you.
The Third P Of Motivation – Potential
Potential is the final P of motivation. This is working because the work will lead to a desired outcome. It will take us towards something that is important to us.
A great example here is working hard daily to get promoted. The thing that keeps you going is achieving the thing you deem important.
Potential is a powerful motivator for self-improvement. It’s about wanting to become the best version of yourself. Or, achieving your potential. If you truly know that you want this, Potential will be the most effective motivator.
